Two ways to connect to your Google Cloud VM — the easy way first, then the right way.


Most beginners get stuck here.

Not because it’s hard. Because nobody explains every step clearly.

This guide gives you two paths: start with the easy one, move to the better one when you’re ready.


Step 1: Create a Google Cloud Account

Go to cloud.google.com. Sign in with your Google account.

Click “Start free”. Add a credit card — you won’t be charged immediately. It’s identity verification only.

New users get $300 in free credits. That’s months of server time.


Step 2: Create Your Server

In the console:

Left menu → Compute Engine → VM Instances → Create Instance

Recommended settings:

Click Create. Wait 1–2 minutes.

Once it’s running, note down the External IP address. You’ll need it.


The Easy Way: Connect from Your Browser

This requires zero setup.

VM Instances list → find your instance → click the SSH button on the right.

A terminal window opens in your browser. You’re in.

Black screen. Blinking cursor. That’s your server.

Good for: quick tasks, checking on things. Not ideal for: long sessions. Close the browser tab and the connection drops.


The Right Way: SSH Key Connection

An SSH key is a matched pair — public key goes to the server, private key stays with you. Every connection is authenticated automatically. Secure, stable, works everywhere.


Generate Your SSH Key

Mac / Linux — open Terminal:

ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 -f ~/.ssh/gcp_key -C "dayou"

Windows — open PowerShell:

ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 -f $HOME\.ssh\gcp_key -C "dayou"

Copy and run as-is. The username dayou at the end is what Google Cloud uses to create your server account — you can change it to anything you like, just remember what you used.

This creates two files:

  • gcp_key — your private key. Never share this.
  • gcp_key.pub — your public key. This goes to Google Cloud.

Upload Your Public Key

View your public key:

Mac:

cat ~/.ssh/gcp_key.pub

Windows:

type $HOME\.ssh\gcp_key.pub

Copy the entire output — from ssh-rsa at the start to your username at the end. One single line. No line breaks.

In Google Cloud Console:

Compute Engine → Metadata → SSH Keys → Add SSH Key

Paste it in. Save.

Common mistake #1: Line breaks in the pasted key. Connection fails. The key must be one unbroken line.

Common mistake #2: Missing username at the end. Google Cloud won’t recognize it. The format must be: ssh-rsa AAAA... yourusername


Connect from Your Computer

Mac / Linux:

ssh -i ~/.ssh/gcp_key dayou@12.34.56.78

Windows:

ssh -i $HOME\.ssh\gcp_key dayou@12.34.56.78

Replace dayou with your username and 12.34.56.78 with your server’s external IP. Everything else stays the same.

First connection will ask:

Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?

Type yes. Press Enter.

You’re in.


Connect from Your Phone (Termius)

Download Termius — available on iOS and Android. Free version is enough. No account needed.

Step 1: Import your private key

Termius → Keychain (bottom menu) → “+” → Add Key → Import from file

Find your private key file (gcp_key — the one without the .pub extension).

Transfer it to your phone first:

  • iPhone: AirDrop from Mac, or use Files app
  • Android: transfer via USB or cloud storage

Common mistake: Trying to paste the key as text. Won’t work. You must import the actual file.

Step 2: Add your server

Home → New Host

Fill in:

  • Address: your server’s external IP
  • Port: 22
  • Username: your username
  • SSH Key: select the key you just imported

Save. Tap to connect.

First time you’ll see an “Unknown host” prompt. Tap Continue.

Terminal appears. You’re connected from your phone.


You’re In.

Server running. Connected from computer and phone.
